Final Card – Graduation Card

This is my final output of my replacement greeting card:

Here is the 1st draft of my card design:

The idea is to create a greeting card to wish my friends, Fyz because of her convocation. So, I use image that I took during her convocation (for 2nd page). Put a word of wisdom (create using juxtaposition learn from creative studies class)

Process:

1) I use this image to create main page background, this picture is taken during my vacation at Kuala selangor:

I also do a little bit touch up to this image

2) Using shape and pen tool, i create student and graduation hat:

3) Then I create vignetting using single black layer:

4) Now, proceed to 2nd page, first of all, I use aqua color for background:

5) Then, using this image that i took during mmu’s 9th convocation, I use as secondary background. I apply S-Curve to this image to get sylish look. To get fade look, i apply feather and eraser. Before that, i change this image opacity to 70%:

6) I put a pattern create by using shape tool, change from normal to soft light with opacity to 70% and apply vignetting:

7) Then I apply text with blending effects such as stroke and drop shadow:

I forgot to change color setting from CMYK to RGB…thats why, the main page look like purple…

In this consultation 3, i apply shape tool, brush tool and i enhance my image by changing a little bit color and align.

I enhance my card using stroke tool.I experiment with a lot of color, and this is the best color and most suitable stroke color i’ve got. I also change color of my logo to black. The reason I change it, to attract viewer eye (design principle – brightness)

I try to create a different card. So, I create blind date card. Right now, just thinking what happen if this card is real? hahaha..

Tutorial 10: shape

This tutorial is about shape. Shape is one of my important and favourite tool. It create a new layer. In this articles, I show you, how to create a custom shape template using pen tool. Custom shape is library of thousand of shape and logo.

First, open a new file.

Create your own shape using pen tool. In this example, I try create a cartoon whale. Try to get familiar with pen tool, because it really help (using pen tool in illustrator & adobe photoshop is different..you should try it )

After finish design your shape, go to:

Edit > Define Custom Shape

Dont forget to put your name of custom shape

Finally, you can view your shape at custom shape pallete. Next time, when you want to use it, just pick it up. You can set size and color without change the shape.

Tutorial 9: Special Effects

I love this tutorial. I can experiment and mix all kind of filter in photoshop. In this excercise I only apply Radial Blur & Gaussian Blur. The main theme for this image is fantasy. Thats why I choose this image so I can apply Ray of Light Techinque and Glow effect. I apply glow effect using Gaussian Blur. For step by step, see this video how I make it:

E-Wallpaper

Previous class (13/11/09) gave me an idea to my create E-wallpaper. I apply almost all Dr Ken’s lecture. Base on Friday class, we learn about Design Principle. When come around creating a poster/wallpaper (in context delivering message), bear in mind, we have to use as limited colour as possible. That’s why, during our primary school, when entering poster competition, the maximum colour that set by organizer are 3 (correct me if I’m wrong). This is the example that I get from net. Designer use 3-4 colours only:

In my opinion, the reason we use limited colour in poster, is to show our work are balance. Balance, in design define as, when eye consider complete. Too much colour would affect viewer to get the message delivered by poster. Good combination of colour will make poster/wallpaper balance. Actually, this principle is subjective. Different person come with different point of view. That’s why, we as a graphic designer, need to elaborate and inform our viewer about our design. For example, reason we choose colour, layout or style.

Next step, I apply Emphasis. Base on Dr Ken’s lecture, Emphasis is differentiate that drawn our eyes. For example, in my e-wallpaper below, I apply “open day” word with different colour that attracts our eyes. Emphasis also subjective; It depend on eyes of viewer and perception. But, when using different colour in one text, it will make a different.

I also apply some thin line in my e-wallpaper. Base on my experience, apply a line within a text can drive our eyes attention in reading long text. But, most line in my e-wallpaper is to create stylish looking (see picture below):

First thing I notice when my housemate see my e-wallpaper, his eyes is attract to image that I use. Those 4 images I take it yesterday (Saturday). Before I paste on e-wallpaper, I edit image using Adobe Photoshop Light room. I make those picture border (learn from tutorial 4 class) by apply Polaroid border that I can find from internet.

The base colour I use, represent colour of FOM during convocation. To make interesting, I apply a wall texture combine with this colour. As previous entry (tutorial 5) I apply vignettes around wallpaper except on picture. This is the best way to drive eyes of viewer to concentrate on picture first. Below is the original texture image that I use:

Tutorial 5 – Retouching

First of all, i want to align this image. i use measure tool to pick the straight line. then i go to:

image > rotate canvas > arbitrary (refer to below picture)

just hit enter because the image will automatic align base on line that we made (refer to below picture)

I crop image because i dont like the classic border (refer to below picture)

I want to color this image, so first step is to get greyscale image. Go to:

image > adjustment > desaturate (refer to below picture)

Now, I start to repair this image using stamp tool (refer to below picture)

I do a little bit retouch using burn tool to dark her hair and eyes (refer to below picture)

Her teeth looks to odd, i make an adjustment using stamp tool (refer to below picture)

Now, i start to color her skin. I just light brown. By using rectangle tool, i just create a box around her face (refer to below picture)

Tthen i go to change from normal to multiply. I also change oppacity around 50% (refer to below picture)

I start to clean unwanted space aroun face by using eraser (refer to below picture)

I also paint her lips (refer to below picture)

I put an blusher effect to his face to make more color effect. Using ellipse tool. then i go to:

filter > blur > gaussian blur

I choose 50 to create nice fade (refer to below picture)

Then i use erase to remove unwanted area (refer to below picture)

Same thing i do to her eyes (refer to below picture)

I also paint the background using same technique (refer to below picture)

This time, i didnt use eraser tool. i use polygon lasso tool (refer to below picture)

Then i right click and choose feather (ctrl + alt + D) and choose 50 pixel. Then i hit enter (refer to below picture)

I also color her hat. using same technique (refer to below picture)

I feel this image look nice withour classic border. So, i decide to remove all border (refer to below picture)

I create a vignettes around image to make look portrait image. I use polygon lasso tools and then i inverse the selection by right click and select inverse (ctrl + shift + i) (refer to below picture)

Next, i use feather effect. I use 50 pixels also (refer to below picture)

Using curve, i try to make darker side around her face (refer to below picture)

I create my own border around this image. using crop tool, i create a nice solid white border similar to polaraid border (refer to below picture)

The last effect i want to put is glow effect. First, i duplicate the main image (after i merge all layers) (refer to below picture)

The image that we copy, i put blur filter. go to:

filter > blur > gaussian blur

i choose 15 pixels (refer to below picture)

3Then, with same selected layers, i change it to multiply and opacity around 50% (refer to below picture)

This is my blog, so I have to say something about myself. Sometimes it is hard to introduce yourself because you know yourself so well that you do not know where to start with.

My name is Afdhal Nidzam Bin Abd Raffar. I’m a guy and I was born in Kuala lumpur. I don’t have many memories of Kuala Lumpur, though. My family moved to Jeddah when I was two years old, and I grew up in different places; Sarawak, Kedah and currently in Terengganu because of my father’s job.

I am particularly interested in photography, computing, digital art and writing. I’ve been introduce to Adobe Photoshop since I was 16 years old, but it was not very serious until I started study in MMU. I’ve been doing quite a bit of teaching. I really enjoy teaching about Adobe Photoshop to a captive audience, usually secondary school. As for computer, it’s been a favourite of mine since secondary school.

I am a photographer. I like taking pictures and this is my part time job. I build my company with my brother and I wanted to become influence by taking pictures. So, I learn a lot from internet and people’s experience. As far as I know, I found photography is frustrating and rewarding — but most of all, fun.

Other hobbies of mine include a small amount of sports such as rugby and I love travelling. My dream vacation is Egypt because I love history subject a lot! Egypt is one of historical place in the world.

More recently, I busy with my event (Sekolah@MMU Perdana Taiping) and of course! my study. Hopefully I still have a time to study and got an A+ for all subject in this trimester. Aminnn..
